Geologists report that the unique features of the area - the 11 long narrow lakes lying side by side, the wide valleys and the deep gorges with rushing waterfalls - were formed by the grinding action of Ice Age glaciers. These geographical features are found nowhere else in the world.  The glacial sculpted area of Finger Lakes Travel Region is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts.

Viewing scenery is probably the most favorite outdoor activity in this region. The area is well known for some of the state's best scenery and fishing opportunities and also includes the famous resort, Watkins Glen, which is located along the shores of Seneca Lake.

Waterfalls and deep cool gorges abound. Bounded by Lake Ontario to the north and the state of Pennsylvania to the south, the Finger Lakes also offer a myriad of water-oriented sports including excellent fishing, boating, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing. Camping opportunities, multi-use trails, hunting, picnicking and winter sports prevail as well.

Because of the location and climate there are dozens award-winning vineyards surrounding many of the lakes, complete with wine-tasting tours for a relaxing weekend.
